What it's for
Every sector and industry gets one of four statuses, based on its gap against the S&P 500 and which way that gap is moving.
- Leading
- Ahead of the index and the gap is widening.
- Weakening
- Ahead of the index but the gap is narrowing.
- Improving
- Behind the index but the gap is narrowing.
- Lagging
- Behind the index and the gap is widening.
How to use it
- Switch on “Map view” on the Sectors page.
- The horizontal axis is the gap versus the S&P 500; the vertical axis is how that gap changed over the last two weeks (four in 3M). The axes cross at zero.

Good to know
- Status is based on price moves only; it's independent of the Quality Score.
